Applying Professional Scrum is a two-day course designed to teach Scrum through practical experience rather than theory alone. Participants work in Scrum Teams, build a software application and complete a series of Sprints that simulate the challenges and working patterns of real Scrum environments.

Throughout the programme, learners explore the mechanics, roles, principles and empirical process behind Scrum. Common mistakes, misunderstandings and dysfunctional behaviours are discussed so that participants can recognise the warning signs when Scrum is not being applied effectively.

The course is particularly valuable for teams and individuals who are new to Scrum. It also provides a strong knowledge foundation for more role-focused training for Product Owners, Scrum Masters and Developers.

Participants work together to produce releasable software while combining discussion, exercises and practical delivery. This gives them direct experience of empirical decision-making, team collaboration and incremental value creation.

The course also includes a free attempt at the globally recognised Professional Scrum Master I (PSM I) certification assessment.

Course Purpose

The purpose of the programme is not simply to explain Scrum terminology. It is designed to give participants practical insight into the mechanics and practices of Scrum so that they can use the framework effectively when developing complex products.

Throughout the course, participants:

  • Work as Scrum Teams
  • Complete multiple Sprints
  • Develop software
  • Experience Scrum events and accountabilities
  • Apply empirical decision-making
  • Identify common Scrum problems and dysfunctions

Prerequisites

This course is designed for people who are new to Scrum or are just beginning to work with Scrum and have limited or no practical experience.

Participants will gain the most from the course if they:

  • Have studied the Scrum Guide before attending
  • Have been involved in, or have a strong interest in, a project that develops or enhances a software product or application

Programming skills are not essential. Participants work in self-organising teams, so it is expected that each team is likely to include at least one person with development capability.

Pre-Course Reading

Participants should be familiar with the Scrum Guide before attending.

It is particularly useful to understand not only the Scrum rules themselves, but also the reasoning behind them and how they support the overall framework.

What You Will Learn

By the end of the course, participants will be able to:

  • Explain the foundational elements of Scrum and how they fit together
  • Participate effectively as a member of a Scrum Team
  • Contribute to the delivery of valuable working software
  • Recognise common Scrum pitfalls and dysfunctional patterns
  • Understand empirical decision-making more clearly
  • Participate more effectively in Sprint-based planning, delivery and improvement activities
