The course is designed for an audience with 6 months + Tableau experience and an interest in technical concepts like workbook performance, complex data sources and combining mismatched data.

This course can be taken standalone or as progression from – Tableau Fundamentals (QATBFUND).

  • Knowledge of data types and database design concepts
  • Ability to create and format basic chart types in Tableau
  • Comfortable with excel formulas, Tableau functions and any other syntax
  • Experience using and designing dashboards (any software)

Target audience

Suitable for Tableau super users who are responsible for creating reports and data sources for their organisation, capturing business logic in calculations and parameters, supporting other tableau creators with their questions.

You will be interested in deepening your understanding of Tableau and its flexible data visualisation features as a tool for storytelling, complex charts and multi-level dashboard design.

  • Data source extract design and curation – reshaping / cleaning / transforming
  • Add a knowledge layer on top of the data sources including calculated fields
  • Combine data sources with different types including join calculations
  • Utilise parameters and table calculations
  • Plot multi measure charts with measure names and measure values
  • Design multi-level dashboards with interactive features
  • Chart and query performance optimisation tools

Module 1 Product and Overview

The aim of this first short section is to ensure learners know about the products in the Tableau ecosystem, what the installation/ update process looks like and will run through a typical end-to-end publishing journey for Tableau from .tds to Tableau online and end users.

Module 2 Data Sources: Connections & Purpose

This module takes a deeper dive into data sources and how to manage the sometimes-challenging formats that raw data arrives in, using the transformative capacities and reshaping features of Tableau such as split, data source filters, assigning data types and roles, Tableau Prep flows.

Module 3 Combining Data Sources

This module is about selecting and combining data sources from files, connecting to databases, reading tables in PDFs and using Unions, Joins, Relationships and Cross-database filtering, learning how the combination method chosen is affected by cardinality and granularity.

Module 4 Visualizing and Interactivity

This module is about designing visuals to find insights in the data, combining measures in charts and tables, leveraging parameters, tooltips, dashboard objects, filters and table calculations to create great interactive visualisations and dashboards.

Module 5 Enhancements

This module will consolidate learning across the previous modules and add performance optimisation techniques to the core concepts to ensure greater understanding and more confidence in using Tableau at the workplace.
