Frequently asked questions about ABAP Programming for SAP HANA Training Course (FAQ)

The ABAP Programming for SAP HANA approach requires developers to rethink application logic so it can benefit from the power of the database. In classical ABAP development, data is often transferred to the application layer and processed there, while HANA-oriented development aims to push as much processing as possible down to the database. This improves performance, reduces unnecessary data transfer, and delivers much better efficiency for processes working with large data volumes.

Code pushdown is the practice of moving data processing from the application server to the database layer, and it is one of the core principles of performance optimization on SAP HANA. With this approach, only the necessary results are returned to the application layer, avoiding unnecessary transfer of large datasets. It is especially valuable for complex queries, aggregations, and filtering operations where efficient use of system resources is critical.

ABAP developers who want to write high-performance programs for SAP HANA need to carefully evaluate data access logic, query design, and unnecessary loop processing. It is especially important to adopt set-based processing instead of row-by-row handling, select only the fields that are truly needed, and design database operations more intelligently. This approach improves application performance and also contributes to better system scalability.

CDS Views play an important role in HANA-focused ABAP development because they make it possible to model data in a more semantic and reusable way. Developers are not only retrieving data but also defining business logic within a structure that is easier to understand and maintain. This approach supports cleaner architectures for reporting, analytics, and application development.

The enhanced Open SQL capabilities introduced in the SAP HANA era provide developers with more powerful, modern, and readable ways to access data. This makes it possible to write more efficient queries for many scenarios without always needing database-specific development. As a result, development time can be reduced while making it easier for ABAP developers to build performance-oriented applications.

The ABAP on SAP HANA approach encourages developers not only to write code but also to think strategically about data models and application architecture from a performance perspective. Decisions about where business logic should run, how data should be modeled, and which components should be designed for reusability become much more important. This perspective supports the creation of more sustainable, modular, and high-performance solutions in modern SAP applications.

This training creates a strong bridge for developers who want to move from a classical ABAP mindset to a HANA-oriented development approach. Participants gain a solid foundation in performance-driven thinking, using the power of the database, working with modern data access techniques, and understanding next-generation ABAP development principles. This makes them more effective in current SAP projects and better prepared for future S/4HANA and HANA-based development scenarios.

AMDP provides value especially in complex or intensive database operations that cannot be handled efficiently with standard Open SQL alone. It allows developers to take advantage of native SAP HANA capabilities and execute specific logic directly at the database level. This makes it possible to build stronger solutions for high-volume data processing, advanced calculations, and performance-critical scenarios.
