Prerequisites

In addition to their professional experience, students who attend this training should already have the following technical knowledge:

Essential:

  • Basic knowledge of the Microsoft Windows operating system and its core functionality.
  • Working knowledge of Transact-SQL (equivalent knowledge to QATSQL and QATSQLPLUS).

Nice to have:

  • Working knowledge of relational databases.
  • Some experience with database design.

Target audience

The primary audience for this course is individuals who develop and maintain SQL Server databases as their primary area of responsibility, or work in environments where databases play a key role in their primary job.

What You Will Learn

After completing this course, students will be able to:

  • Design and implement Tables.
  • Describe advanced table designs.
  • Ensure data integrity through Constraints.
  • Describe indexes, including Optimized and Columnstore indexes.
  • Design and implement Views.
  • Design and implement Stored Procedures.
  • Design and implement User Defined Functions.
  • Respond to data manipulation using triggers.

Training Outline

Introduction to SQL Development

  • This module introduces the core concepts of database development and explains the basics of how databases are created.

Designing and Implementing tables

  • This module explains how tables are designed, including processes such as normalisation, data types, and schemas, before moving on to the process of creating tables.

Advanced table design

  • This module explores some advanced table designs, such as partitioned, compressed, and temporal tables.

Constraints

  • This module covers the use of constraints such as primary key, foreign key, unique, and default to enforce data integrity.

Indexes

  • This module begins with an explanation of how SQL accesses data before explaining clustered, nonclustered, and columnstore indexes are created and how they can improve performance.

Views

  • This module explains the purpose of views within a database and how they are created and maintained. At the end, a short section discusses performance considerations.

Stored procedures

  • This module explains the purpose of stored procedures and the various types a developer can create, including the use of error handling.

User defined functions

  • This module introduces user defined functions, explains how they are created, and how they compare to views and procedures.

Triggers

  • The final module looks at the use of DML triggers within a database, including AFTER and INSTEAD OF triggers.

Exams and assessments

There are no formal exams included in this course. Participants will complete interactive labs and knowledge checks to reinforce learning outcomes.

Hands-on learning

This course includes:

  • Hands-on labs to apply key concepts in a real-world environment.
